On their debut album, "On," Altin Gün demonstrates how wonderfully traditional Turkish folk songs can be combined with funk rhythms and a generous portion of psych rock: a modern, danceable sound with an oriental touch.
Psychedelic rock experienced a true heyday in Turkey in the 1960s and 1970s and enjoyed worldwide attention. After bassist Jasper Verhulst once performed with Jacco Gardner in Istanbul, he was immediately fascinated by the sound of 1970s Turkey.
With Altin Gün (German Goldener Tag), he made it his mission to revive this sound,
and when he, along with fellow musicians Ben Rider, Nic Mauskovic (The Mauskovic
Dance Band), and Gino Groeneveld (Jungle By Night), met the two
singers Merve Dasdemir and Erdinc Yildiz Ecevit via Facebook, the band was complete.
In addition to guitar, bass, and drums, Altin Gün also frequently
uses oriental instruments, distorting guitars with wah-wahs and incorporating fuzzy sounds.
Their fresh sound and some Western musical influences refresh Anadolu Rock
and fit perfectly into our times. They sing of love, death, longing, and
fate, paired with music that sounds familiar, yet different. Altin Gün knows how to impress with both
cover versions of artists like Selda Bacan, Bari Manco, and Erkin Koray and
their own arrangements of Turkish traditionals.
They blend these with psychedelia, funk, and psych rock, creating a highly
danceable genre mix that is unparalleled.
