The XX - XX

The XX's sound is as minimalist as their band name. Somewhere between Mazzy Star, The Cure, and My Bloody Valentine, they create a sound that is both dark and crystal clear, unlike anything heard in a long time. The London-based quartet, fronted by singer Romy Madley Croft and guitarist Oliver Sim, loves darkness, 80s guitar riffs, and American R&B. It might sound a bit raw, but it's one of the reasons for The XX's unique sound, which NME immediately proclaimed the "in" sound for London. The breathy vocals, the almost bare guitars, and the sparse samples are reminiscent of the dark dream pop of the eighties, yet sound excitingly fresh.
