Gianna Nannini (Italian pronunciation: [ˈdʒanna nanˈniːni]; born 14 June 1954[1][2]) is an Italian singer and songwriter. Her most notable songs include "America" (1979), "Fotoromanza" (1984), "I maschi" (1987), "Meravigliosa creatura" (1995), "Sei nell'anima" (2006) and "Bello e impossibile" (1986). The latter became a hit across Europe, especially in Austria, Germany, Italy and Switzerland.
Gianna Nannini’s 1981 album G.N. is a restless, dreamlike, and highly electronic work, shaped with the help of producer Roberto Cacciapaglia. Following the provocative success of California (1979), G.N. dives deeper into experimental sounds, blending chaotic rock, new wave, and touches of punk.
The standout track, Vieni ragazzo, sensual and synth-driven, reached second place at Festivalbar, but like much of the album, it didn’t become a lasting hit. Songs like Come un treno, Ad occhi aperti, Bi Bip, and Autostrada explore themes of rebellion, fleeting sex, and existential wandering, resonating more with youth abroad—especially in Germany—than in Italy.
Despite its lack of “classics,” G.N. remains a fascinating and atypical entry in Nannini’s discography—dark, nocturnal, and boldly experimental. It marked a transitional phase before her broader success with Conny Plank in the albums that followed.
